Drive through Sri Lanka's breathtaking hill country from Kandy to Ella. Pass rolling tea estates, dramatic waterfalls, and misty mountain peaks. Fixed rate from LKR 12,000.
The drive from Kandy to Ella is widely considered one of the most beautiful road journeys in Sri Lanka. This route takes you deep into the Central Highlands, passing through endless rolling tea plantations, past dramatic waterfalls, and through cool mountain air. Ella, perched at 1,041 metres above sea level in the Badulla District, has become one of Sri Lanka's most popular destinations for travellers seeking hiking, nature, and the famous Nine Arch Bridge.
There are two main driving routes from Kandy to Ella, and we recommend different ones depending on your priorities:
Route 1: Via Nuwara Eliya (Scenic Route) β ~5 hours
This is the route we recommend for first-time visitors. You take the A5 highway south from Kandy through Gampola, then climb steeply into the hill country through Ramboda (home to the stunning 109-metre Ramboda Falls). From there, the road winds through the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country, passing vast estates like Mackwoods and Pedro before reaching Nuwara Eliya at 1,868 metres. After an optional stop in Nuwara Eliya (known as "Little England"), the road descends through more tea country, past Hakgala Botanical Garden, and along dramatic mountain passes before arriving in Ella.
Route 2: Via Mahiyangana & Badulla (Faster Route) β ~4 hours
If you have already seen the hill country or prefer a quicker journey, we take the A26 highway east from Kandy through Mahiyangana (gateway to Minneriya and the Cultural Triangle). From Mahiyangana, the road heads south to Badulla, the capital of Uva Province, then continues the final 15 km to Ella. This route is about an hour faster but offers different scenery β dry-zone landscapes transitioning to lush mountains.
Unlike the Kandy to Colombo route, which is primarily a transport corridor, the Kandy to Ella drive is a destination in itself. The landscape transforms dramatically as you climb from Kandy (500m elevation) through the wet zone forests, into the tea country above 1,200 metres, and then descend to Ella's dramatic ridge-top setting at 1,041 metres.
The air temperature drops noticeably as you gain altitude β Nuwara Eliya can be 10β15Β°C cooler than Kandy. Bring a light jacket if you plan to step out at the higher viewpoints.
The Kandy to Ella train is world-famous and rightly so β it is one of the most scenic rail journeys on earth. However, there are practical reasons why many travellers choose a private car instead:
Pro tip: Many of our guests drive from Kandy to Ella, then take the famous train ride from Ella to Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) or from Ella to Badulla on a shorter section. This way you experience the best train scenery without the 7-hour endurance test.
The hill country is pleasant year-round, but conditions vary:
Morning departures (7amβ8am) are ideal for the best light and clearest mountain views. Afternoon mist can reduce visibility at higher elevations.
This journey passes through some of the most stunning scenery in all of South Asia.
At 109 metres, Ramboda is one of Sri Lanka's tallest waterfalls. Located about 90 minutes from Kandy on the Nuwara Eliya route, it cascades down a mountainside surrounded by tea estates. There is a viewing platform and a small cafe with panoramic views.
The route passes several working tea factories including Mackwoods Labookellie, Blue Field, and Pedro. Most offer free factory tours showing how Ceylon tea is made β from fresh leaf to finished product β followed by tea tasting. Allow 30β45 minutes for a visit.
Known as "Little England" for its colonial-era architecture, Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868m and feels a world away from tropical Sri Lanka. Red-brick post offices, a golf course, and a racecourse dot this misty hill town. Perfect for a lunch stop.
Just 6 km from Ella, this 25-metre waterfall is named after the legendary King Ravana of the Ramayana epic. According to legend, Ravana hid Princess Sita in the nearby cave. The falls are easily visible from the road, and you can walk to the base for photos.
Ella's most iconic landmark β a stunning colonial-era railway viaduct built entirely of stone, brick, and cement with no steel. Set against a backdrop of dense jungle and tea plantations, it is most dramatic when a blue train crosses (typically around 9:15am and 3:45pm).
As you approach Ella, the famous "Ella Gap" opens up β a dramatic viewpoint overlooking the southern plains 1,000 metres below. Little Adam's Peak is a 45-minute hike from Ella town offering 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

The drive takes 4 to 5 hours depending on the route. The scenic route via Nuwara Eliya takes about 5 hours with stops. The more direct route via Badulla takes about 4 hours. We recommend the Nuwara Eliya route for the stunning tea country scenery.
Both are excellent options. The train is famous for its scenery but takes 6β7 hours, reserved seats sell out weeks in advance, and luggage space is very limited. A private car takes 4β5 hours, picks you up at your hotel, and lets you stop at waterfalls and tea factories. Our recommendation: drive Kandy to Ella, then take a shorter train section from Ella to enjoy the best of both.
Absolutely! Free photo stops are included at Ramboda Falls, tea plantation viewpoints, and Ravana Falls near Ella. If you would like to do a tea factory tour (30β45 minutes) or stop for lunch in Nuwara Eliya, just let us know and we will plan accordingly. The drive is flexible and goes at your pace.
For first-time visitors, we strongly recommend the Nuwara Eliya route (A5 highway). It passes through the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country with incredible mountain scenery, waterfalls, and the charming hill town of Nuwara Eliya. The alternative route via Mahiyangana and Badulla is about an hour faster but less scenic.
Ella is packed with things to do: hike Little Adam's Peak (45 minutes, easy), climb Ella Rock (2β3 hours, moderate), visit the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, see Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave, try the Flying Ravana zipline, or simply relax at one of Ella's many cafes with panoramic mountain views. Most visitors spend 2β3 days here.
Bring a light jacket or sweater β the hill country is significantly cooler than the lowlands, especially Nuwara Eliya where temperatures can drop to 10β15Β°C. Comfortable shoes are recommended if you plan to walk to waterfall viewpoints. A camera is essential β the scenery is spectacular.
