Kandy to Sigiriya by Private Car β€” Your Guide to the Lion Rock

Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic archaeological site β€” a 5th-century citadel built on top of a massive 200-metre granite column that rises dramatically above the surrounding plains. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Sigiriya is the single most visited paid attraction in Sri Lanka. The 88 km drive from Kandy takes you from the lush hill country into the dry-zone plains, transitioning through one of the most culturally rich areas of the island.

The Route: Via Matale & Dambulla

The most popular route from Kandy to Sigiriya heads north through Matale on the A9 highway, then takes the A6 to Dambulla before the final 17 km stretch to Sigiriya. The total distance is about 88 km and takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

Leaving Kandy, the road passes through Matale β€” known for its spice gardens. Several family-run spice gardens along the road offer free tours showing how cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, cloves, and cardamom are grown and processed. These tours are genuinely interesting (not just tourist traps) and last about 30 minutes.

From Matale, the landscape flattens out as you enter the dry zone. The vegetation changes from dense tropical forest to scrubland and paddy fields. After about an hour, you reach Dambulla, home to the magnificent Cave Temple complex.

The final 17 km from Dambulla to Sigiriya is a straight, flat road through rural villages. As you approach, the massive rock fortress gradually appears on the horizon β€” one of the most dramatic sights in Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress β€” What to Expect

King Kashyapa I built this remarkable palace-fortress in the 5th century AD. The climb to the summit takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and involves around 1,200 steps. Along the way you will see:

  • The Water Gardens: Elaborate 5th-century fountains and pools at the base that still work during the rainy season
  • The Boulder Gardens: Massive boulders arranged as terraced gardens and meditation areas
  • The Mirror Wall: A polished wall with ancient graffiti dating back to the 7th century
  • The Sigiriya Frescoes: Famous cloud maidens painted on a sheltered rock face β€” originally there were 500, today about 22 survive
  • The Lion's Paws: Two enormous carved lion's paws that once formed the entrance to the final ascent (the head has long since collapsed)
  • The Summit: The ruins of the royal palace with a 360-degree panorama of forests, tanks (reservoirs), and distant mountains

Entry fee: USD 30 for foreign adults, USD 15 for children (SAARC nationals pay less). Open daily from 7:00am to 5:30pm (last entry 5:00pm).

Best Time to Climb Sigiriya

The rock can get extremely hot, especially the exposed stairways near the summit:

  • Early morning (7am–9am): Best option. Cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, softer light for photos
  • Late afternoon (3pm–5pm): Heat has eased, golden hour light is spectacular, but you are racing the 5:30pm closing
  • Midday (11am–2pm): Avoid if possible. The metal stairways become extremely hot and there is no shade on the upper sections

We can time your Kandy departure so you arrive at the ideal climbing window. For a 7am start, we suggest departing Kandy around 4:30–5:00am.

Dambulla Cave Temple β€” Stop En Route

Dambulla is directly on the route and well worth a 1–2 hour stop. The Royal Cave Temple (also UNESCO-listed) contains five caves with:

  • Over 150 Buddha statues dating from the 1st century BC to the 18th century
  • Ceiling and wall murals covering 2,100 square metres β€” the largest and best-preserved collection of ancient paintings in Sri Lanka
  • A 14-metre reclining Buddha carved from living rock

Entry fee: LKR 2,500 for foreign adults. The temple is on top of a hill (about 15 minutes climb). Shoes and hats must be removed before entering.

Day Trip vs Overnight Stay

Both options work well:

  • Day trip from Kandy: Depart 5–6am, climb Sigiriya, visit Dambulla on the return, back in Kandy by 5–6pm. Contact us for day trip pricing.
  • One-way transfer: LKR 7,000. Many guests stay overnight near Sigiriya and continue to Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, or Trincomalee the next day.
