Private transfer from Kandy to Sigiriya β the ancient citadel atop a 200-metre granite rock. Stop at Dambulla Cave Temple en route. Fixed rate from LKR 7,000.
Sigiriya is Sri Lanka's most iconic archaeological site β a 5th-century citadel built on top of a massive 200-metre granite column that rises dramatically above the surrounding plains. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, Sigiriya is the single most visited paid attraction in Sri Lanka. The 88 km drive from Kandy takes you from the lush hill country into the dry-zone plains, transitioning through one of the most culturally rich areas of the island.
The most popular route from Kandy to Sigiriya heads north through Matale on the A9 highway, then takes the A6 to Dambulla before the final 17 km stretch to Sigiriya. The total distance is about 88 km and takes 2 to 2.5 hours.
Leaving Kandy, the road passes through Matale β known for its spice gardens. Several family-run spice gardens along the road offer free tours showing how cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, cloves, and cardamom are grown and processed. These tours are genuinely interesting (not just tourist traps) and last about 30 minutes.
From Matale, the landscape flattens out as you enter the dry zone. The vegetation changes from dense tropical forest to scrubland and paddy fields. After about an hour, you reach Dambulla, home to the magnificent Cave Temple complex.
The final 17 km from Dambulla to Sigiriya is a straight, flat road through rural villages. As you approach, the massive rock fortress gradually appears on the horizon β one of the most dramatic sights in Sri Lanka.
King Kashyapa I built this remarkable palace-fortress in the 5th century AD. The climb to the summit takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and involves around 1,200 steps. Along the way you will see:
Entry fee: USD 30 for foreign adults, USD 15 for children (SAARC nationals pay less). Open daily from 7:00am to 5:30pm (last entry 5:00pm).
The rock can get extremely hot, especially the exposed stairways near the summit:
We can time your Kandy departure so you arrive at the ideal climbing window. For a 7am start, we suggest departing Kandy around 4:30β5:00am.
Dambulla is directly on the route and well worth a 1β2 hour stop. The Royal Cave Temple (also UNESCO-listed) contains five caves with:
Entry fee: LKR 2,500 for foreign adults. The temple is on top of a hill (about 15 minutes climb). Shoes and hats must be removed before entering.
Both options work well:
Sigiriya is the gateway to Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. From here you can easily reach:
From hill country spice gardens to ancient rock fortresses β this route is packed with history.
The Matale district has been the centre of Sri Lanka's spice trade for centuries. Family-run spice gardens along the road offer free tours demonstrating how cinnamon is peeled, pepper is dried, and vanilla is hand-pollinated. A fascinating and aromatic stop.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 2,000 years of history. Five caves contain 150+ Buddha statues and 2,100 square metres of ancient murals β the finest cave temple complex in Asia. The hilltop location also offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The crown jewel of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. This 200-metre granite column was transformed into a palace-fortress by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Ancient frescoes, water gardens, and the massive lion's paw entrance make this one of the world's most remarkable archaeological sites.
Just 1 km north of Sigiriya, Pidurangala offers a shorter, less crowded climb with arguably the best view in Sri Lanka β a panoramic vista of Sigiriya rock itself rising from the jungle. Entry is just LKR 500, and the sunrise from the top is unforgettable.
Just 30 minutes from Sigiriya, Minneriya is famous for "The Gathering" β one of Asia's greatest wildlife spectacles. Between June and September, hundreds of wild elephants congregate around the ancient Minneriya Tank. Evening jeep safaris are the best way to see them.
Sigiriya sits at the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, within easy reach of Polonnaruwa (medieval ruins), Anuradhapura (ancient dagobas), and Ritigala (mysterious forest monastery). Staying overnight here opens up a world of ancient history.
