Quick answer

For most travellers the private car is the simplest option. Our sedan starts at LKR 18,000 for the trip, and the drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. The bus is possible but slower and less predictable with luggage. The Kandy to Sigiriya route page has the full details.

By bus

Buses from Kandy head north through Matale and then towards Dambulla. Most people who go by bus change at Dambulla for the last stretch to Sigiriya. Buses cost less than a car, but they stop often, and the seats fill up at busy times. You will carry your own bags on and off each bus.

Is there a train?

A train is not the easy answer for this trip. Sigiriya is not on a line that suits a day trip from Kandy, so we do not recommend planning around one.

By private car

Our sedan for Kandy to Sigiriya starts at LKR 18,000, and the price includes the car, the driver and the air-conditioned ride. The route runs through Matale and Dambulla. Dambulla Cave Temple sits on the way, so you can stop there. The temple entry fee is paid separately.

The car lets you leave when you want, eat when you want and go straight to a hotel near Sigiriya without changing vehicles. If you are staying in Kandy and want to see the rock fortress early, the early start is the main reason to book a car.

Stopping at Dambulla on the way

Dambulla is on the way from Kandy, so a private car transfer can stop at the cave temple. Our Kandy to Sigiriya page has the route and the fixed rate.

Tell us if you want a longer stop at the temple or the rock. We plan the timing around it. The rock opens at 7am according to our route notes, so an early start helps with the climb.

Comparing the three options

  • Bus: lowest cost, slowest, most changes, least flexible with bags.
  • Train: not a practical default for this trip (see the note above).
  • Private car: from LKR 18,000 for a sedan, about 2 to 2.5 hours, door to door, stops when you ask.

If you have young children, heavy bags or a fixed arrival time at Sigiriya, the car is usually the calmer choice.
