The most direct route from Kandy to Bandaranaike Airport follows the A1 highway — the main Colombo–Kandy road — for the majority of the 120km journey. The route passes through some of Sri Lanka's most scenic and historically significant terrain before descending to the coastal lowlands.
The journey begins by descending from Kandy through the famous Kadugannawa Pass — a dramatic mountain section where the road winds through forested hillsides with sweeping valley views. The Dawson's Tower, a 19th-century colonial navigation tower, marks the highest point of this pass at 550m elevation. This section is visually stunning in the early morning mist common to Kandy.
After Kadugannawa, the highway levels out through the towns of Mawanella, Kegalle, and Warakapola — the traditional mid-point of the Kandy–Colombo journey. The landscape transitions from forested highlands to rubber plantation country and then the denser suburban towns approaching Colombo. This stage is typically the fastest.
