The Kandy to Ella train is scenic, but it is not built for big bags. Here is how to plan the trip, and when a car for your luggage makes more sense.
Trains have racks and overhead space, but they fill quickly. A large suitcase can be hard to lift and easy to lose sight of on a busy carriage. A backpack and a small bag are much easier.
Book train tickets from the official railway channels. Book early if you can, because seats on busy days can be hard to get. We do not publish timetables or ticket prices here, because they change.
We help with timing and seat class where we can. We cannot guarantee a reserved seat, and we always keep a road backup ready.
This is the plan many travellers choose. You ride the train with a day bag. Your bags go by road to your hotel in Ella in the car. Read more about the car and train hybrid to see how the route is set up.
A car for the whole trip to Ella is also possible. The sedan guide for Kandy to Ella is LKR 20,000. It takes about 4 to 5 hours with photo stops, and it stops when you want.
The route has been disrupted in 2026. Our route notes say the Kandy to Nanu Oya section was still disrupted, while Nanu Oya to Ella resumed on 20 June 2026. Check the current status with the railway before you plan a day around the train.
Ella is a small town on a steep hillside. Some hotels are up steps or narrow lanes. Tell your hotel and your driver where you are going, and ask about the last stretch when you book. Our Kandy to Ella page has the route details.
