PickMe Price per km in Sri Lanka: How Fares Work

There is no single per-km price you can rely on. Here is what goes into the app fare, what moves it, and how to compare it with a fixed price for the same trip.

Why a per-km price is hard to pin down

Most people who search for a PickMe price per km want one number they can multiply by the distance. That number does not exist in a form you can rely on. The app sets the fare for each trip, and it changes the fare as conditions change.

This article does not quote a per-km rate. Any figure you find online can be out of date within weeks, and it may not match the vehicle you pick. What you can do is understand the parts of the fare, check the estimate before you confirm, and compare the final price with a fixed quote for the same route.

What goes into a PickMe fare

A ride-hailing fare is usually built from a few parts. The app adds them up and shows you a total before you confirm.

  • Distance: the length of the trip between the pickup and drop-off pins you set.
  • Time: the minutes the trip takes, which grow in heavy traffic and while the car waits.
  • Vehicle type: a tuk-tuk, a car and a van are priced differently.
  • Demand: when many people want a ride and few drivers are free, the app can add a peak charge.

Distance and vehicle type are set by your trip. Time and demand change on the day, which is why two people can see different totals for the same journey.

Vehicle type changes the rate

A tuk-tuk ride and a car ride cost different amounts over the same distance. Vans are priced on their own, so compare a van fare with another van fare, not with a car. Pick the vehicle you actually need. If you have three large bags, a cheap tuk-tuk estimate will not help you when the driver arrives and cannot fit them.

Why the price moves during the day

Demand is the main reason an estimate changes. Reports on PickMe fare changes describe a peak charge that applies when there are more ride requests than drivers in an area. The reports we found mostly describe three-wheelers, and they are not dated, so check the app for the car or van you want.

Late evenings, rain, public holidays and big events can all push demand up. If you see a note about high demand, read it before you press confirm.

Long trips: the app estimate against a fixed price

Colombo to Kandy is a good example of a longer trip. Our fixed sedan price for that route is LKR 20,000. The route is about 123 km and usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours, and the details are on the Colombo to Kandy page.

An app estimate for the same trip can look lower at the start. It can rise if the route changes, traffic builds up, or demand goes up before you get in. A fixed quote does not move with those things, but it only helps if you know what it covers. Ask what is included, including tolls, parking and stops, before you agree.

How to check the fare before you confirm

Open the app, enter the exact pickup and drop-off point, and choose the vehicle. Read the total before you press confirm. If the app shows a note about peak or high demand, take a screenshot so you have the figure you were shown.

Watch the total when a driver accepts. If it changes, check the reason in the app before you get in. Add any tolls or parking you will pay separately, and any stop you plan on the way, so you compare the full cost with a fixed quote.

When an app ride is still the right choice

For a short hop inside Kandy or Colombo, an app ride is often the simplest option. You can get a driver quickly at a normal hour, and the fare for a few kilometres is usually small. Apps also suit one person with one small bag.

The case for a fixed price is stronger when the trip is long, the time is fixed, or you need the same car for several hours. If you are comparing options for a longer journey, the PickMe vs private driver page sets out where each one fits.
