Udawalawe is a long way from Kandy by road. Here is how to plan the transfer, the safari and the choice between Udawalawe and Yala.
The drive from Kandy to Udawalawe takes about 4 to 4.5 hours each way, over roughly 200 km. A round trip is more than eight hours of driving before you add a safari. Most travellers stay overnight near the park. Our Kandy to Udawalawe route page has the transfer details.
The usual road heads south out of the hill country. Some drivers use a route through Ella or Ratnapura, depending on the day and the traffic. We choose the route that suits your hotel and your safari time.
Safari jeeps usually leave early in the morning, when animals are more active. Book the jeep through your hotel or a trusted safari operator. Entry tickets and jeep hire are separate costs.
Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and binoculars if you have them. Dress in neutral colours. The jeep is open, so the dust and sun are part of the ride.
