Why times change

Times change for a few reasons. Weather and sea state can stop a boat. Boats are sometimes out of service. Trial boats may be added or removed. Sundays and holidays often have different times. Ask the day before, so you hear about changes in time.

How to confirm times

  • Ask your guesthouse on Delft, who usually know the boat plan for that week.
  • Ask people at the jetty on the day, and wait for the boat that is actually loading.
  • Check notices from the Delft Divisional Secretariat, which posts cancellations.

Do not rely on a single old post for the time. Ask in person the day before, and again in the morning.

Boat types

Three kinds of boat cross to Delft. The public ferry is free and usually crowded. Small cargo boats carry people as well as goods. Private boats can be hired for a set price. Each one has a different feel, so choose the one that suits your group and the sea that day.

How early to arrive and who boards first

Arrive at least 30 minutes before the departure you plan to take. Local residents usually board first, and visitors can be left behind when the boat is full, particularly on weekends. Keep your ticket or boat plan ready, and stay near the front of the queue.

Planning your return

The last boat back from Delft is the one to plan for. If you miss it, you lose the day and possibly the night. Build in extra time, do not schedule a late event on the island, and set a clear meeting time with your driver at the jetty.

If you want a driver to meet you at the jetty, our Delft Island from Jaffna guide covers the jetty run.
