Private Transfer to Sri Lanka's Most Historic Coastal City
The drive from Kandy to Galle is one of the great cross-country journeys in Sri Lanka β traversing the entire island from the Hill Country heartland in the centre to the southern Indian Ocean coast. You start at 488m elevation in Sri Lanka's cultural capital, pass through the Kandyan highlands and rubber plantation country, cut across Colombo's urban sprawl, and arrive at Galle Fort: a complete Dutch colonial city preserved on a rocky headland where the Indian Ocean crashes against 17th-century ramparts.
The contrast is extraordinary. Kandy is temples, mountains, misty forests, and Buddhist heritage. Galle is colonial bastions, boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, and the smell of the ocean. Both are remarkable; travelling between them in a day is a privilege uniquely available by private car.
Kandy β A1 highway β Colombo β Kottawa Interchange β E01 Southern Expressway β Pinnaduwa exit β Galle
The Southern Expressway (E01) is Sri Lanka's showcase motorway, running from Kottawa in Colombo's suburbs all the way to Matara on the south coast. It is a dual-carriageway with speed limits of 100km/h and no traffic lights β a revelation compared to the old coast road. The journey from Kottawa to the Pinnaduwa exit for Galle takes approximately 50β60 minutes. Total Kandy to Galle: 3.5β4 hours via this route.
Toll cost: Approximately LKR 600β800 on the E01 (included in your LKR 17,000 fixed rate). There are no other toll roads on this route.
Kandy β A1 β Colombo β Kalutara β Beruwala β Bentota β Aluthgama β Hikkaduwa β Galle
The old coast road through Bentota and Hikkaduwa is the classic Sri Lanka south coast drive β lined with coconut palms, small fishing harbours, beach-town guesthouses, and the blue-green Indian Ocean just metres from the road. This route adds 45β60 minutes but offers the opportunity to stop at Bentota Beach (water sports, river safari) and Hikkaduwa (coral reef snorkelling, sea turtles). If you're not in a rush, this road is genuinely beautiful.
Galle Fort was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It was originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 and significantly expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century after they took control in 1640. The British took Galle in 1796 but made relatively few changes β meaning the fort's layout and much of its architecture remains overwhelmingly Dutch colonial in character.
The fort walls stretch 1.4km around a headland peninsula, with 14 bastions including the iconic Flag Rock bastion at the southern tip, where locals and tourists gather every evening to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Walking the full perimeter of the ramparts takes about 45β60 minutes and offers views over the ocean on three sides. At sunset, Flag Rock is genuinely magical.
The fort is pedestrian-friendly β most of it is best explored on foot. The cobblestone streets mean walking is easy and driving is slow. Amal can drop you at the main Gate and you can spend 3β4 hours exploring on foot before he picks you up again. For onward travel to Unawatuna, Mirissa, or Weligama, he can be called back or you can arrange a local tuk-tuk.
If you choose the coastal route, several excellent stops can be incorporated en route from Kandy to Galle. All stops are included in the LKR 17,000 rate β just let Amal know your preferences when booking:

Most travellers using the Kandy to Galle route are doing a broader Sri Lanka circuit. Here are the common itinerary patterns Amal supports:
If you're planning multiple legs, Amal can coordinate the full itinerary β knowing your schedule in advance allows him to ensure availability at each checkpoint.
Approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours for 190km. Via the Southern Expressway (fastest route through Colombo and down the E01 motorway), the journey is 3.5β4 hours with no stops. Via the scenic coastal road through Bentota and Hikkaduwa, add 45β60 minutes. Amal will suggest the best option based on your timing and whether you want to stop en route.
LKR 17,000 fixed per vehicle, all-inclusive. Tolls on the Southern Expressway are included in this rate. This is per vehicle β up to 4 passengers travel for the same price. Card payments (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted as an alternative to cash.
Yes, the fort is ideally explored on foot. The entire fort area is compact β you can walk the ramparts (1.4km perimeter) and explore the main streets in 3β4 hours. The cobblestone lanes are flat and well-maintained. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Amal will drop you at the main gate entrance and you can explore independently, calling him when you're ready to continue or be picked up.
Yes, absolutely. If you take the coastal route rather than the Southern Expressway, Bentota, the Kosgoda turtle sanctuary, and Hikkaduwa are all natural stops along the way. These stops are included in the LKR 17,000 rate at no extra charge. If you want a beach swim at Bentota, allow an additional 60β90 minutes in your travel time. Just let Amal know your preferences when booking.
There is no direct train from Kandy to Galle. You would need to take the KandyβColombo train (3 hours to Colombo Fort), then change to the Colombo FortβGalle train on the coastal railway (2β2.5 hours). Total: 5β6 hours including the changeover, plus travel to/from stations at both ends. While the ColomboβGalle coastal train is scenic, the overall journey is much longer and less convenient than a private transfer for most travellers with luggage.
Galle is perfectly positioned for south coast day trips. Unawatuna beach is 5 minutes away and one of the prettiest in Sri Lanka. Mirissa whale watching (blue whales, NovemberβApril) is 40 minutes east. Weligama surfing is 30 minutes east. Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is 2 hours north. Yala National Park (leopards, elephants) is 2.5 hours east. Amal can arrange day trips from Galle onwards if you need a driver for the southern part of your itinerary.
A living Dutch colonial city built on a headland. Walk 1.4km of rampart walls, visit the 1755 church, explore cobblestone streets lined with galleries and boutiques.
Every evening, locals and travellers gather at Flag Rock bastion's tip to watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. One of Sri Lanka's most atmospheric daily rituals.
Just 5 minutes from Galle Fort β a sheltered crescent bay with calm, clear water. Excellent swimming, snorkelling, and a lively beach-bar scene.
40 minutes from Galle. November to April is peak season for blue whale sightings β the largest animals on Earth. Sperm whales and dolphins year-round.
20 minutes north of Galle. Snorkel off the beach directly over a protected coral reef with sea turtles, tropical fish, and good visibility in calm weather.
En route via the coastal road: Bevis Bawa's extraordinary private garden and Bentota's excellent beach and river estuary with water sports and boat safaris.
